My Sunday Best, Volume 83: Advent Music!

Sunday, December 3, 2017

Happy Advent!! We dug out our decorations last night and the kids are SO excited to start lighting candles! Even though they're last year's candles... We'll get new ones this week, I think.

Everyone was a little disappointed that we didn't get anything out except one print, the advent wreath, and Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem. "Where are the other decorations?? The Christmas lights!!! The other nativities!!"

Seems like they forgot that we decorate slowly! Veeeery slowly. And don't finish decorating until Christmas!

We passed by a Baptist church on the way home from Mass, and they've got their Nativity up, complete with Baby Jesus! Meanwhile, in our house Mary and Joseph are still traveling (I love this set!).

I got a set of seasonal prints from Rose Harrington Art last year + a set of frames from the Dollar Tree - low-key, but perfect for decorating-challenged people like me!

Once again, I'm considering firing my photographer in favor of a trusty tripod...

However, Edith and Mary Claire in these two pictures? Just perfect.

Edith was actually pretty good during Mass! We made it through Communion before she remembered that she can be loud... So I took her and Mary Claire out, and then Mary Claire started screaming because I made her give Edith the board book that she wanted. Sadly, 5-year-olds do not magically start behaving well at Mass, especially when they have a baby to distract them...

I love that with the change in liturgical seasons, we change the songs we're singing at home as well. I've touched on this in previous posts, but in case you're wondering exactly what we're singing for the next few weeks, here's a list!

Some of our favorite hymns & chants for Advent:

Alma, Redemptoris Mater
Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
Come, Thou Redeemer of the Earth
Creator Alme Siderum
Gabriel's Message
Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending
Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming
O Come, Divine Messiah
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
On Jordan's Bank
People, Look East

Also: Immaculate Mary (for the Immaculate Conception)

The Advent at Ephesus CD (free on Prime streaming) is excellent, as is the Rain for Roots Advent CD (also free streaming on Prime!). You can find quite a few of the above hymns on both of those CDs!

You can find the full songs for the Alma Redemptoris Mater, Creator Alme Siderum, Come, Thou Redeemer of the Earth, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, in the Pius X hymnal, available to view online free here, or used here.

Your parish hymnal likely has the others - we use the St. Michael Hymnal, which definitely has Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus, Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, O Come, Divine Messiah, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, On Jordan's Bank, and People, Look East.

The only one we like that isn't in our hymnals is Gabriel's Message, which is in the public domain here.

If you'd like to print just the lyrics to these hymns and chants, I've compiled them all right here for free!

Your turn!

Post your outfit details & links or not, regale us all with your children's antics, reflect deeply on the readings, or just do a straight picture post - anything goes as long as you actually wore your outfit to church. The link-up is open until Friday, so you've got plenty of time to add your post!

Just a few ground rules before you link up:

1. Please include a photo of what you wore to church this week.

2. Please link back to this post in the body of your post, so your readers know where to find other posts (posts not mentioning "My Sunday Best" or not linking back to this post will be subject to removal).

3. Please visit some other posts in the link-up & leave a nice comment - this is all about affirming each other and building community, not just link dropping :)

4. Make sure the link you add is a link to your specific post or instagram picture (hashtag #mysundaybest and mention me in your caption, @rosiehill425 so I don't miss it!), not just your blog address.

5. Enjoy, and thanks for linking up!
